School Debating Competition – Commonwealth Games
We are pleased to offer your school the opportunity to take part in our first debating competition. You will be debating on the question below.
“Is the commonwealth relevant in today’s society?”
The Primary school’s event will be open to year 5 and 6 pupils, taking place from 10.00-12.00 on Thursday 12th May at the University Indoor Arena, Plock Court GL2 9DW.
The competition format will include an initial proposal followed by an opposing response; one further round of proposal and response followed by questions from the floor and judging panel. (Each proposal/response will be no longer than 2 minutes). Each team will then be given 5 minutes to prepare a 3-minute team summary.
How will the winning team be determined?
Teams will be judged against a range of criteria, designed to demonstrate their topic knowledge, ability to develop a convincing motion and reasoned response, depth of thinking, presentation, and ability to communicate effectively (under pressure)
Within the format of the debate judgments will be formed through;
Quality of proposal/reply delivery (content and presentation)
Response to challenge (from opposing team, floor/audience, judging panel)
Questions provide from the floor *
Speaker 1 – sets the scene
Speaker 2 – develops the argument
Speaker 3 – sums it up and adds any further information to the argument.
Examples/facts and figures/quotes are all good ways of supporting what they are saying so evidence of this is good!
